EVGA 8400
« on: May 05, 2008, 12:57:14 AM »

Is crap, never buy this. I was down at my local frys getting a new video card because my 7600GT after 3 years of great services, finally bit the dust. The 8400's box made is seem so much better then my old 7600gt which is what I planned on buying until this card was spotted. No heatsink, just a tiny fan, maybe 60mm. I cannot even run Hitman Blood Money on High like my old card did. the card is shit, be warned. I have always trusted BFG and EVGA...but now i dunno.

Dude...a 7600GT most certainly will smoke an 8400 card. You should really have looked it up. Its just supposed to be a budget DX 10 card...as a matter of fact I believe my old 6800GT smokes the 8400. It is what it is man. No false advertisements there.

Honestly, I'd pay the 10% restock fee if possible. It'd be worth it to save yourself the headaches.

Pricerange wise, i'd pick up a 7600 Not dx10, not even the gt, but it'll get the job done either way.

8400's are designed for mostly DVD, TV, things of that nature, and not for gaming. I have an eVGA 8400 as a backup to my backup  ::) and it had a hard time playing CSS with an E6600 @ 3GHz, 2GB of RAM, 680i motherboard, at a resolution of 1024 x 768. Granted it worked, but not nearly as well as 7600 or 8600. Main problem with an 8400 is the memory. It's only 64-bit, whereas a 7600 or 8600 are 128-bit, resulting in twice the performance in most cases.

Note your 8400 being way at the absolute very bottom...

I don't mean to make you feel bad, but you should have checked with some of us before going out and buying a video card.

Or you can save yourself the research and guessing and just read this article. They did all the work for you already.

I'd buy the 7950GT if it was priced below $120 before I'd pick up an 8600GT personally, especially when I don't need DX 10.

Also consider that the 7950GT can be software voltmodded and can be overclocked to well beoynd the levels of a 7900GTX. Since they both have the same memory and same cores, all you really need is a better heatsink and you're set. I got mine up from a factory overclocked speed of 560/1450 to 640/1780. With a conductive ink pen, you can raise voltage even higher to get speeds of up to 700-720 on the core, at which point you can't possibly buy a faster single-core DX9 card. For reference, the 7900 GTX runs at 650/1600.
