I only use FRAM EXTRA TOUGHGUARD with my 403 Oldsmobile(84 Grand Prix),it catches alot of shit(considering it's not really a streetcar[6 MPG],I give it hell).I have to rering it every 2 years(starts to smoke on topend after about 1 year[told you I give it hell],and lose a couple of ponies)FRAM ALL THE WAY.

Extra ToughGuard? Is there such a thing? There's an Extra Guard and a Tough Guard. Which one are you using?

Did you read the articles I posted btw?

awesome project XR, im envious of you being able to mod a car on the manner you do, keep up the work

btw when the hell did you move to CA?

I moved back toward the middle of January.

I love this project. It has more potential than you could imagine. Honestly, I only learned this from messing around, asking questions on discussion boards, and tearing into engines myself. You don't learn until you try. If you own a car, fixing it yourself is an excellent way to save money and learn how to work on cars. The money you would normally spend to pay someone else to do it (not including parts) could be spent on high quality tools. After a while you build up enough tools to do any job. I'm pretty sure I own over $700 worth of tools, but I've saved a hell of a lot more than that by doing the work myself.

If you drove my 95 Buick Regal, you definitely wouldn't think it has 196,500 miles on it. Feels like its barely hitting 90k.

A buddy of mine in the AF was going to school at night and did a presentation on oil filters. He had a second job at Riley's Autoparts and grabbed all 5 big brands + Riley's. He cut them all open and showed the insides. It was crazy. Fram had some shoddy filters. I think NAPA's was really, really bad. Riley's was actually the best out of them all.

Yep, some brands are definitely better than others. Out of the 4 or 5 filters that Fram makes, the Tough Guard is the only good one. The rest are crap.

Did some more talking to people, and I might end up getting a new alloy radiator. I'm still thinking about it. It will take more than just a plug and a T splitter to turn my stock radiator into a single-pass.

Anyways, I bought a few more things for this project. Air filters ($40 each from Auto Zone) and an air compressor. The compressor is a 6gal 2hp, which I picked up for $60. The guy used it for 2 years to inflate tires, or so he said. I bought it for the air die grinder I'll be picking up for the porting. I decided to use one of these instead of my dremel as I burned through 3 of them trying to port my Regal's manifolds. These things are fine for light work, but they don't have anywhere near the amount of power I need for a job this big.

$1713 so far...

These are high performance cone air filters, which get much better airflow than a flat drop-in K&N filter. K&N filters are typically $50. I would know as I've used them in all of my parents' cars and my own for OEM replacements. These Spectre filters use the same basic oiled high flow cotton fiber technology that K&N uses, which you wash and re-oil when they get dirty. However, they are a lot cheaper than K&N filters, and perform much better as well. The Jaguar needs two filters; one for each bank.

These filters also have a 10 year warranty, which is good enough for me.

K&N is the best for money(cost being the problem),I've used K&N for 4 years(that,I do know for sure)it comes with a cleaner kit, that if i'm right on the math, lasts another 4 years before I have to buy another kit.But to each his own BRO,still glad you have a Jaguar,"BIG PIMPIN'"...

lol, I hope you realize that the filters I just bought are identical to K&N filters, with the only difference being that they're cone filters and not flat drop-in filters. These also use the K&N oil recharge kits, and I've been using a K&N in my regal for 6 years. So ha  :)

You'll see really big pimpin once that 400HP gets roaring.

My K&N filter on my Lincoln Mark 7 LSC,is a cone type that fits inside my fenderwell (coldair intake),just like a mustang,I did away with the flat style filter that was factory.I agree, the flat filters aren't as good as the cone ones.

Bought a few more parts.

$61 purchase from Summit Racing includes a complete 92-piece porting and polishing kit

http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=SUM-G1060&N=700+4294925139+4294838951+4294854481+4294854591+115&autoview=sku

And a cross buff kit:

http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=SAI-260013&N=700+4294854481+4294854591+115&autoview=sku

$13 from a local hardware store bought me a flapwheel, a reinforced steel grinder bit, and a 80 grit grinding stone.

Also bought an air die grinder (Husky, from home depot), with fittings and a hose, for $50.

Up to $1837 so far...

In a few weeks I'll also be ordering a replacement radiator, as modifying the current radiator to convert it from a dual pass to a single pass looks like it will be more work than its worth.

I might not need a new timing chain tensioner if I'm careful. Lets hope I'm careful, as I this should be the last of my major purchases to get this thing rolling.

What; no carbon 3 tiered bow shaped spoiler and chrome windshield wiper covers? How's it supposed to be fast then?

lol!

I may be looking for a late model toyota celica spoiler, as apparently they're almost identical to the spoiler on the XJRS. That's about as flashy as I'll go with this car though.

I'm considering getting rid of the mufflers entirely and running only resonators to "muffle" the sound. We'll see...

Got the heads cleaned up. I haven't yet scraped off the residue from the old cam cover gaskets, but I'll get around to that eventually.

I also started porting. Got one of the holes done. Its pretty amazing how much room there is for improvement. I must have ported a good half an inch and I'm still not done. Seems Scott wasn't kidding when he said that Jaguar really overdid everything.

Got a nice check from some side work I've been doing, so I ordered the new alloy radiator today.

http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=SUM-380451&N=700+4294908331+400304+115&autoview=sku

$291 shipped.

$2128 spent so far.

Now I need to find some braided fuel hoses...

Now we're talking.

27 gallon, 5HP compresor, 5.3CFM at 90PSI.

$100 for the nearly new compressor including a very good 50 foot hose with fittings.

My die grinder was killing my old 6 gallon 2hp compressor. Nowhere near enough power.

$2168 with the new compressor and hose.

Got two holes nearly done now. This is going too damn slow though. I'm down 2 holes and 2 of my 4 80 grit sand drumrolls are gone. This certainly won't work too well for too long. There's a great amount of control, but definitely not fast enough, so I ordered an aluminum carbide burr.

$30 shipped.

1/2" diameter, 1" flute (cutting surface), 2.75" shank

This should help things come along very well. I'm also going to be removing the valves to allow for some better reach.

I also ordered valve stem seals at $90 for all 24 shipped.

$2288 spent so far...

Getting a lot closer to getting done. I'm doing the valve job as a "while I'm at it, just in case" thing. I wasn't planning on doing it earlier, but removing the valves will make porting a lot easier, and will ensure that everything is perfect.

You have some problems with your math there:

$291 shipped.

$2128 spent so far.

$100 for the nearly new compressor including a very good 50 foot hose with fittings.

$2168 with the new compressor and hose.

$30 shipped.

I also ordered valve stem seals at $90 for all 24 shipped.

$2288 spent so far...

According to your numbers there it should be

2128
+100
2228
+30
+90
2348

You are missing 60 dollars somewhere.

Progress!!!

Got my carport garage cleaned out and the Jaguar moved in. This is where I'll be doing all of the work on the engine.

Some of my porting progress. The holes that I've worked on arent quite done, but they're getting there.

I also bought a valve spring compressor tool and started pulling springs and valves. What a job!!! My hands hurt.

While my fiance was reading...

What a damn annoying job trying to clamp two springs at a time with that spring compressor.

Intake valves were gunked up like hell!!!

Finally got them all off.

Lots of porting work to be done as you can see. Can't wait for that carbide burr to arrive.

Price update.

2288 + $20 (spring compressor tool) + $20 (two 2-ton jackstands) = $2328.

Scott is going to be in town today and he's lowered the price for intake manifolds, exhaust manifolds, and bored out downpipes from $250 to $150. I'll take some pictures of the new parts when they come in.

I'll be polishing up those manifolds like you wouldn't believe. I may also need a few more grinding stones for those exhaust manifolds.

I still need to find new fuel lines. I might end up making my own...
