Motherboard, Graphics Card and processor upgrade
« on: January 08, 2010, 04:04:46 PM »

So I have finally decided that I'm going to spend my money on trying to fix my computer because it is finally pissing me off too much. I got about 250 dollars that I'm willing to spend for a new motherboard and processor and maybe even graphics card. Right now I got a geforce 7600 gt video card and I might keep that. If any of you tech gurus find something you feel is at a decent quality and decent price then let me know. Also I guess I would have to get new memory.

Your best bet with that budget would be a Core i3 530 CPU and an H55 motherboard. Microcenter is currently selling the Core i3 CPU for $100.

And here's a suitable motherboard:

All you need now is some RAM.

Its a little over your budget, and 2GB isn't a whole lot, but its enough for a start and you can definitely upgrade later once you save up some more cash.

IMO there's really no point in going with older technology. This dual core Core i3 CPU outperforms the quad core Q6600 in all benchmarks, even multi-threaded ones, and its worlds faster than a dual core E8400. Its really an excellent deal.

I'm looking for a video card now to go along with the processor and motherboard I got.

I'm not sure what to suggest with the CPU you bought. Most likely you'll get some bottlenecking going on. But I know that you are on a budget, so with what's left over you can score a 9800GT or the more modern, 9800GTX+ known as the nVidia 250. If you want to shave a couple of bucks the 9800GT is just as well and even if you have a 400 Watt Power Supply, your E5300 isn't drawing that much, so it'll be borderline, but should be fine. You'll know it isn't if it starts to overheat.

So I should be good with a 500 watt power supply then.

Yeah. Just don't go buy the best card out there, because you probably won't get the performance out of it you expect. I'm in the same boat by the way. I have an E6300 and I'll most likely upgrade soon'ish. I got a bunch of this hardware free brand new for troubleshooting this metal bending machine company's Linux DNS servers, so I didn't get all that great of stuff.
