Ventrilo push to talk doesn't work
« on: January 11, 2010, 09:54:07 PM »

Seems I keep forgetting about this, but sometimes with a game I can't talk unless Vent is in focus. Meaning that I'd have to get out of game to click Vent for Push-to-talk to work. On Vent's FAQ, it talks about having Windows 98/ME and de-selecting "Direct Sound". It seems to me more others are likely to run into what's not covered in their FAQ.

If you are running Vista, Windows 7, or WINE, you have to run Vent as Admin if the game is also running in Admin. The reason is apparently, when the game requests control, it gets it regardless of what any other application wants. So if you run Vent in Admin, it'll work as it should. This would also explain why "certain games" do this.

Hopefully this will help someone else and remind me about what the problem is. It only occurred to me after lots of un-checking, testing and rechecking before I even thought that it was whether the app was in focus or not when I hit my talk button.

I guess most people don't have this issue because they install everything under their admin login account or an account that is equivalent to admin.  Why don't you do that?

WOW you are so OLD you forgot I SOLVED this a long time ago.  Remember when we played that Race Car Game..  I couldn't talk in game because of the focus.  I even posted that you had to run vent as admin.  Look it up if you don't believe me..

I looked it up for you :P

Because that's horrible practice and why people like them spread viruses :p Anyway, with Vista on up for Windows, you have UAC, so unless you disable it,  you have to specifically run stuff with admin privileges if you want it to have them. Of course a lot of people disable it, which is also a bad practice, see sentence 1.

Viruses make your life harder. Spreading to other system, makes everyone else's life harder. The whole reason that MS added more security like that, was because people were just downloading and executing anything without bothering to have a properly updated AntiVirus. That and their hype that Vista was more secure than Linux, which certainly wasn't the case, but they did take a giant step, although they have to attempt to force it on their users.
