I started my googling after my post.  I wasn't sure if someone might have a particular recommendation as I've never done this before.  I'll check that one out.  Anyhow, I think I found the rom (or iso or whatever they are calling it for PS games) and will probably just split this thread off later if it works and will leave some info.

Its dated by today's standards, but if you enjoy it, they have FF:Tactics for the Gameboy Advance and I believe the DS. They are a little more...child-like, but still good games considering.

I'm just looking for something I could play on my netbook instead of Master's of Orion.

If you want a more challenging FFT experience, head over to ffhacktics.com. They have a patch you can do to FFT .isos that do a bunch of rebalancing and that sort of thing. Fixes a lot of the broken mechanics (eg. Blade Grasp) and makes the game a bit more interesting. I think the AI is improved as well. Either way, you should go take a look and check some of the patch notes. It's quite well done.

Yeah, I saw that as well.  Here's the torrent I'm downloading.  The password is "romando".

gameboy, ds variations are no FFT games, just shit ass sequels/imitations.  Hell, I bet you cold download a version of Bleem! which was the original PS emulator.  I actually need to plug up my ps2 and throw in my disc of FFT now that you brought it up.

Yeah I couldn't understand why they went with the clan based thing and child dreaming or whatever. Then I realized that they wanted the player to be heavily involved in a story-line while giving the appearance of being somewhat-open, the games guide you to doing whatever and going wherever. It beats  what passes as an RTS on the GBA and DS, which is sad.

Anyway, I think I'm going to try some of that Atlantica tonight.
