Legend of Zelda MUD
« on: November 20, 2006, 01:23:12 AM »

Well as I was researching the Burning MUD's history (been hosting them for awhile and getting lots of people playing it) I came across this new MUD. And because the mentioned the triforce of Courage (Farore), I figured that he might be interested in it, because he seems like one of those guys. Maybe Yashyn too. I might try it out or something.

Anyway, a MUD isn't graphical. They've been around since the late 70s, but you could also co-op with people...like MMORPGs...even back then. Which is saying a lot. You could do it in real time too. You telnet into a MUD server and you get descriptions of whatever room you are in with objects and such and enter text commands to do stuff. Zork Multiplayer anyone?

They do have telnet clients made specifically for MUDs, so you don't have to type in a lot of stuff. And surprisingly there is still a very, VERY large demand for these games. The BurningMUD game has like 30 or 40 people on during the weekdays playing at the same time and on the weekends, over 100 people.

Well now that what MUDs simplistically are is out of the way I'll tell you a bit about this particular MUD. Its at ZeldaMUD and has nothing, but a hosted forums section up, but the developement is going strong and I guess they host 175 (give or take 10) accounts right now. They are trying to implement the story line and such as well.

I guess it is supposed to be after all of the current Zelda games have taken place and Zelda and Link are dead I believe. Ganon is coming back. You can choose whether to fight on Ganon's side or on good side.

I think its pretty neat.

Realms of Despair also has a player base of 200+ constantly and on the weekends sometimes reach 400. Totally free game also. The client i use is zMUD, one time buy thing.

That's cool. I've never played a MUD before. I might start with this one since its simple and in developement. I once had planned on coding a MUD, because I found a code-base where it was 3D, meaning that you could fall down pits, have stuff in the air, etc. and a lot of really nice features, but I just didn't have enough time while I was in the military. And I should probably play one for awhile before I think about building one.

Well builders can be recruited, but I meant building the engine...add in multiclassing and stuff like that.

yeap, we had multiclass, multi race if you chose to be a half elf or something like that. It was pimp until the person who hosted it got divorced and his wife took the server with her, and there was no backup of the game..so that 2 years went down the drain.\

the only sucky thing about making a new mud is the player base, i've tried to start over 10 muds and they never reach more then a pbase of 30

I can help too.  As long as I am not forced to code in Lisp.  I hate lisp.  But then that would probably be the easiest to make it in wouldn't it?

I did see some Lisp code bases, but I guess I've decided to give the NWN 1 toolset a try. Guess there's a lot of persistant worlds online for it and it has a big community.
