How do I know what would be relevant and what wouldn't?

Also - HOSTS file.

"# Copyright (c) 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
#      102.54.94.97     rhino.acme.com          # source server
#       38.25.63.10     x.acme.com              # x client host

# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
#   127.0.0.1       localhost
#   ::1             localhost

The HOSTS file looks fine, which means it is likely, your rogue website is either because your home page, search provider has been changed to something else or it is an extension for your web browser. Regardless, download Hijack This if you don't know what's relevant and post the log file here. It will give a lot of information about what's going on.

Also you should try in Chrome to click the menu to the right of your address bar, click Settings, click Show advanced settings and click Reset browser settings, then click Reset. This should return Chrome to "stock" just in case this spyware is an extension, provider or whatever as well.

I put it through the parser and it said to fix all missing files..

I did that twice but they still come up missing.

Looks like whatever is starting may be being blocked by Malware Bytes. I have a hunch though, is there anything in your C:\Program Files (x86)\DmoaIQ?

Also if you can, give me the link to the website you tried downloading VLC with. I'll shove it in one of my Virtual Machines and track the infection.

it may have been that one. I don't really remember tho. For all I know that could be a legit link.

or

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html
http://vlc-player.softm8.com/?gclid=CKPug_m7_LsCFUtgMgodtjMAuA
http://www.videolan.org/index.html

Those are the first results for searching 'vlc'.

Also - I don't even have that folder. DmoaIQ

I'll check them though videolan.org is legit as those are the actual developers of VideoLAN Client (VLC) Player.

So I have it installing on one of my virtual machines. Did the installer look like this by chance?

Also do you have Optimizer Pro and Real Networks installed now? You'll probably see an Albrechto add-on on Internet Explorer (Tools > Manage AddIns). Albrechto is the ad displayer but it installs some other crappy stuff as well.

Yes I would like the file and all three of those AddIns are bad. You should disable all three and yes it probably was from that Installer. Downloadster like the one I used from the first link you posted will not contain anything bad. It will instead connect to a server and then download and install bad stuff. Technically, you could click Advanced Installation and bypass a lot (I'm not sure it won't install something bad anyway though because I didn't test).

Anyway, attach the file as a zip and I'll regress to my non-infected snapshot and install it.

Something strange I am noticing is sometimes when I open a new page there will be a "clear" page over top of it. Anywhere I click opens up a new tab that wants me to update my browser.

How do I uninstall those addons without just disabling them?

Wow. This is worse than the one I installed last night. This installed add-ins/extensions to both IE and Chrome.

First thing you need to do is go your control panel and uninstall:

Optimizer Pro
albrechto
FindWide.com
MyWordTool
TidyNetwork

Now reboot.

Next paste: chrome://extensions/   into your chrome address bar.

You'll notice TidyNetwork is probably still there. You can't always count on the uninstallers removing everything. They usually at least remove the non-browser stuff.

Now paste: chrome://settings/ into your chrome address bar.

Click Show Advanced Settings... at the bottom. Then scroll all the way down to the bottom and click the Reset browser settings button. Click the Reset button in the popup.

Now click Settings and then click the Trash icon next to the greyed out TidyNetwork.

Now open Internet Explorer and click Tools then Internet Options. Now click the Advanced tab. Click the Reset... button. Checkbox Delete personal settings box. Click the Reset button. Click the Close button when it is finished. Close Internet Explorer (you can reopen it again if you want).

Click My Computer, click C: drive, click Program Files (x86), delete the albrechto folder.

A note:

Optimizer Pro seems to be a big peice of junk that basically does the same thing as Windows Disk Cleanup. It was also one of the adware programs downloaded and installed by that "VLC" installer.

It appears webbrowsing was noticeably slower but I didn't check to see if the information was being sent to some place everytime you entered a new URL but it seems that is likely.

Sorry I've been a little busy. I got around to deleting those programs but didn't see Optimizer Pro?

It installed onto mine. Maybe it didn't onto your's because I was using Windows XP and maybe you aren't. Browsing sped up? No popups?

That's good news but I would have just formatted if I were to sell it. At the very least, make sure you sign out of Chrome (links to your Google account) and clear the browser like you did before again on last power down. At least that way, you're account info online won't be saved. I'd uninstall Steam and its games as well. You don't want them logging onto your account every once and awhile knocking you off (or just change your password I guess).

Your ebay link doesn't work. I guess it is your account stuff is why (I don't really use ebay).

Yea I'm going to format the PC.. only problem is I don't have the driver CD for the computer so they will have to figure that out on their own. Which, imo, is a pain in the ass.

They can just download them from http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/Product/xps-l702x.

Yea - that's where I always go and get them. But once you first format your computer you have no wifi/ethernet support until you get a driver. So you need to burn it to a disk ect. It's just a pain in the ass.

That's lame. Why in the world would at least the ethernet NIC not be plug and play? I mean seriously. Who cares if it has AfterBurner on it? At least it should function without any special drivers. Dell is so bad. Someone brought their Dell laptop to me asking me to fix it because it would not charge but it would still have power when plugged in. I figure it is just a bad battery but no, it is that the Dell power adapter's chip inside that identifies itself to Dell's BIOS as being a Dell product died, so although it worked, the BIOS wouldn't let it charge. How crappy is that?

Idk it was weird though because when I installed ubuntu it would plug and play the ethernet port..

Also my battery died on this computer too and got a replacement one. It still shows it as having a bad battery. It does allow it to charge but it still gives me the "0% available, plugged in, not charging, consider replacing your battery" bullshit.

Ubuntu comes with a comprehensive WiFi/Ether driver packaged that they've been working on for years. That's why.

12.10 I think it was, if that's how they label all the short term releases, gave me so many problems with wifi.  It just couldnt connect to my router for whatever reason.  Once I used the LTS version it worked perfectly.

Probably one of the biggest confusions in the world of using Linux is bleeding edge vs production. Distributions focused on the desktop and bleeding edge like Fedora doesn't help matters. But basically, bleeding edge means that you get the latest software but it hasn't been through any significant testing. Even more confusing is that popular software tends to have a fast life cycle in the open source environment, so that means not using the "stable" builds will cause software to constantly be in that state - where bugs are killed quickly but new ones will also be created quickly. Obviously the easy answer to this is "LTS" releases, where the focus is more on stability rather than bleeding edge.

It is tough to keep a balance. If you look at Apt (Debian-like distributions such as Ubuntu) you have the option of using stable, testing and unstable repositories. Unstable is true bleeding edge, while testing is considered at least able to run and stable is considered vetted or production level.
