This sentence is a disaster without a couple of punctuation marks.

Also, runes? Wha... what are they?

Seriously though, there are "right" ways to buy runes but ultimately it's a game and it's supposed to be fun so maybe you should just get the runes that you'll have the most fun with that fit your playstyle.

Do you get to buy maps? Because less than 5 maps since the existence of LoL seems shitty.

For someone who doesn't even play this game with us, you sure are opinionated on it.

Do different seasons count as "different maps?" Yeah, there are only 4 maps. As a group, we typically only play one of them. I can't say I ever feel like I really want to play different maps like I do in something like Battlefield or CS.

It is probably the reason I dislike most MOBAs. There are specific strategies learned on how to optimize specific lanes with specific people with specific gear. I like dynamic strategy. It is probably the same reason there are so many variants of Chess including radomized starting positions (except for King and Rook due to castling) and extended boards, new pieces and so on. Once strategy becomes textbook and counter strategy is also textbook, then really it is regurgitation and memorization and thus boring because there is no strategy. In a team game it is worse because if someone deviates at all, they get told they are terrible and hounded about it.

From what I have heard about DOTA, it is very much like that - only a few viable champions and pretty specific builds.

In LoL there is quite a bit of variety and adaptation. There are some champions that get over powered after updates, but Riot does tend to do a pretty good job about bringing them back in line. If you watched the playoffs/finals you would have seen a few teams who pulled out champions that completely took everyone by surprise, and they won with them (Rammus a tank who does particularly well against physical damage). They were able to pick him as a counter to a team that was all physical damage. If the team had gone more mixed damage, he would never have been picked.

One of the current over-powered champions is Warwick (basically the big bad wolf). He gets banned in 90% of games right now while Riot is still figuring out how to fix him (and they have acknowledged that he needs fixing). Riot is surprisingly good at communicating with the players. In all honesty, they probably communicate better than any other gaming company I have seen.

One of their current stated goals for this season is to make it more dynamic with the strategy. I think they still have a ways to go to make it anywhere near as dynamic as some simple board games, but they are making progress.

You are also spot on about the people who deviate from certain "norms." That being said, if what they do works, then things tend to be okay, but people still whine a lot. I know I played a couple of champions this past season which were much more viable than most people thought or expected. They'd doubt my ability to play them but I would usually play pretty well and help carry my team.

All that said, the game type we typically play together is called All Random, All Mid (ARAM). You get a random champion (and up to 2 rerolls that you have to re-earn with games played). It really makes you learn other champions and how to try and counter very weird team compositions. Unfortunately, this mode tends to favor teams that can poke and siege. Riot has introduced a couple of items to help counter this, but they aren't always enough.

Also the high-level memorization level strategy you're talking about AO only manifests at higher levels of play. When it's a bunch of scrubs playing it's generally pretty frantic and dynamic.

Yeah I've played LoL for awhile at one point. I just couldn't get into it. I kept playing for awhile but I just didn't enjoy it. I kept trying and finally I gave up. I just didn't like it and I didn't like where it was going.

Also even at starting levels you'll find teammates complaining about what lane you are in and such. LoL is primarily memorization, min/maxing and that's boring. Starcraft II is the same way. I like strategy gaming both on and offline but I can't call LoL a strategy game, not really. It could almost be considered a small scale tactics game, similar to Warmahordes but that's still a stretch since it is really - look up which lane/jungle does the character normally do, what specifically on these 4 maps, what does the character need to buy to do one of three acceptable strategies (after you've picked one) and does this character harass, creep control, etc. Then after you've filled in the blanks you just do that. Everyone else does that. If you aren't doing that then you have to 'l2lol lololol'.

I'd compare LoL more to the PvP in an MMORPG than a strategy game. There is a little grinding to get your items. Rather than picking a "sorcerer" or "tank" and then customizing their skills, you pick a champion that already has those skills/profile.

Also the high-level memorization level strategy you're talking about AO only manifests at higher levels of play. When it's a bunch of scrubs playing it's generally pretty frantic and dynamic.

Yeah, when we're all playing ARAM it is typically chaotic, including me yelling at everyone for pulling Leeroy Jenkins moves.

Even at the high level though, I would say that the memorization is more for knowing exactly what will do what, but there are a lot of ways to counter things. What I don't like about the professional competitions is that it tends to not have much excitement. It usually consists of one team barely suffocating the other with a pillow until they finally expire. Rarely do you see a comeback (although it does happen) There are a few teams which are very creative in what they do and it does tend to create confusion and can work brilliantly.

Maybe. I've never played the ARAM gamemode. I don't think it existed when I played. I have beat teams and pulled off some great chains but still get chastised by my teammates because they have no idea what I'm doing and because of that, every one of their deaths is my fault, even when we won. I wouldn't say I'm bitter about my experience but rather annoyed at both the style of the game and the elitist community.
Monopoly has a deeper strategy than LoL, so I'll just be an elitist strategy gamer and thumb my nose at it.

Rank in terms of strategy:
LoL/Awesomenauts < Thinking about what to eat for dinner < Being commander in an ArmA event < Wargame: Red Dragon

I find the LoL community a little too toxic for my taste.
And frankly, it ruined the RTS genre :(

How did LoL ruin the RTS genre?
Technically, MOBA would be a sub-genre of a Real Time Strategy. You could say that it is also a mixed genre including a strategy RPG. Regardless basic elements of both are there. Yet another argument is that what could have been a good RTS was made as a MOBA instead. Example: Command and Conquer 4.

Can we say that World of Warcraft ruined First Person Shooters?
As long as we can say your analogy is analogous to shit.

I don't think it's fair to say LoL ruined the genre, rather a game like C&C recognized LoL's success and failed to emulate it. It's like a house contractor attempting to sell houses after seeing how much money a realtor makes. The two are related but it's not the realtor's fault for the contractor failing to recognize what makes their job unique and desirable.

So C&C 4 seemed to kill the franchise then Supreme Commander 2 killed what was probably going to be the next huge RTS franchise due to MOBA like design. Arguably the worst design points of End of Nations were MOBA inspired and though highly anticipated by the RTS community and even free to play flopped, really before it even released. That's OK, there's always the Warcraft series since it is a staple RTS franchise, right? Oh that's right Blizzard decided to make a MOBA instead. The RTS genre doesn't have a lot of good franchises being developed out there. Right now it seems like if you want a good franchise, your only hope is to stick with 4x titles which isn't the same. Publishers will just go with whatever is popular and if that means cranking out some crap MOBAs before one sticks, then that's what they'll do before they fund another RTS.

Well, there's Wargame, AI War, and... uhhh... ?????

I was going to say something along the lines of this if I actually had internet the past week.

You've got Sins, SoTS (ugh), StarDrive and Warlock technically for franchises as well but yeah there aren't many good 4x's around.

Red Alert 2 is hands down my favorite childhood RTS, I understand what you're saying. I want a new c&c title as well, i'll keep my fingers crossed for another in the red alert series, but won't hold my breath. I didn't like RA3. I haven't played it, but galactic civ 2 is a very highly regarded 4x game. I think galciv 3 will release in 2015 too. I couldn't get into it, but Europe iv is another great 4x. Isn't a new RTS with man vs some sliver goo in development? I want a new RTS game too, but I don't think it's fair to blame MOBAs. RTS games will have their revitalization, like space Sims are now with elite dangerous and star citizen, we just have to be patient. Or we could make our own RTS to capitalize on the lackluster market and make a fortune!

Edit: it looks typing on my phone when I can't see what I've already said turns me into a 3rd grader. Sorry for that awful read haha
