So I'm getting in a bit over my head with hosting questions for work. We have the attached proposal for some hosting and I'm not sure if it is a reasonable price or not. Part of me is thinking of how much Agent paid per month for co-locating/renting a server which makes this seem extremely expensive.

The two websites we run get about 10,000 page views per day combined. It is extremely text heavy, with very minimal graphics. That being said, our less visited of the two sites (about 2,000 visits per day) is primarily data driven and creates graphs based on data input by users.

If this is reasonable, we'll probably go with them just because they are the ones who are building our site. We can always switch hosts down the road is my reasoning.

It isn't reasonable because that's a dedicated server quote. I don't know who they use for peering their fiber but that's important too but mine was slightly cheaper because I built my own server, so I didn't rent the hardware, just the rack, bandwidth, IPs (I had 128 dedicated ones believe it or not).

Anyway from the sounds of it, you need shared hosting, if you want a compromise for actual "private cloud hosting", you should look for a Virtual Private Server/Virtual Dedicated Server. A good one would run around $40 non-discounted with a website control panel such as cPanel or DirectAdmin included. I recommend ownCloud (https://owncloud.org/) if you want a real wholly private cloud solution just for your company. I doubt you need the Enterprise Edition and can just use the free open source version which even includes the mobile app support.

A great place for research, sales and asking of questions is http://www.webhostingtalk.com/. People responding are either web hosting administrators or web host owners generally. The big names pay people to go there everyday and make sure bad review posters are taken care of. It is somewhat of a web hosting secret but also has a big reputation (amongst the industry).

I've been working crazy long hours so I didn't research iMedia or check their network but if you really want me too I probably could but if you seriously asked them for a hosting quote and you told them what you posted here for your needs, then they are shady already. I've seen this same sort of thing many times before.

Let me know if you need advice and if I don't post here, you can add me to Facebook or something too.

EDIT: For reference, I once got a deal years ago on WHT (I'm not sure if it was a 'sale' or I helped someone there out) but I get 40 GB of space, unlimited bandwidth, all the amenities and unlimited space for MySQL databases for $2.98/month from http://www.stablehost.com/ which is a customized package for me (you'll find the plan under Enterprise for $60/mo. I believe).

Thanks Agent. I'm still going through all this, but this is exactly the sort of information I was looking for.
You did good asking. Companies get sold things for webhosting that they absolutely do not need at a premium cost. Shared hosting is for low traffic needs (low traffic being say, less than 50,000 to 100,000 visitors a day but depends on content). 'Enterprise' shared hosting just means you a pay a little more to be on shared hosting servers with less people are generally for higher traffic sites. If your content is 'static' then you can probably get away with a lot of traffic on cheap shared hosting. If you have a lot of dynamic content, such as a Content Management System, Blog, Forums, etc. then your traffic needs to be low.

The good news? You can start out small and good webhosts will do all of the hard work of upgrading you and doing all of the transfers and such, say shared to VPS for example if needed. Generally speaking though, unless your website is going to be top 100 on Alexa or have some sort of complicated processes that are running in the background and are database heavy a dedicated server is going to be too much. You'll probably never go passed VPS level for needs.

When talking about VPS there are two kinds: Managed and Unmanaged. Unmanaged is usually cheaper but someone needs to manage it with just some normal technical support if something goes wrong. Someone such as a system administrator should be able to do this. Managed is where you tell the company what you want and they do it. But these both are speaking about the backend such as the operating system, configuration, security and so-on. Normal website stuff such as uploading content, designing your website and so on will be done by your web team without needing assistance from the VPS company as if they were using a normal hosting solution.

Yeah, we're going to be using Kentico as our CMS. We're spending a bunch of money ($200K) on getting that all set up. It is definitely going to be a dynamic site hooked in to our Association Management System (Microsoft CRM) so we can finally not have 10 different silos of data.

I am the web team. Kinda scary, I realize.

Kentico? You guys must love MS and its technology. Also you guys must love spending lots of money for closed off support.

Any thoughts on OVH? https://www.ovh.com/us/dedicated-servers/enterprise/2014-MG-128.xml#produits

They are located in Montreal but seem to have extremely hard to beat prices.

Before I start looking into their infrastructure, are you sure that a dedicated server is what you need? From what you described shared enterprise hosting is probably all you need. A Virtual Private Server, if you'd like to do with it as you please.

I think a shared server would work fine. But my boss (who will be the first to admit he doesn't know anything about hosting) is a bit concerned about shared resources. We have the money, so in some senses I don't mind going the dedicated route. My main concern is how stable things will be after we deploy. I get the feeling that once it is set up, there isn't that much which needs to be done server side using consoles, but I figure there is a 50/50 chance I could be completely wrong as well...

I'm also having trouble not trying to find the best deal possible. It is really in my nature to be cheap...

Since my earliest posts, I have since learned about what the requirements are for hosting Kentico: https://docs.kentico.com/display/K8/Server+and+hosting+requirements

I also misunderstood several things earlier and now realize that we are talking about 1 server for Kentico and 1 for the websites.

You'll have to set it all up for a dedicated machine yourself other than the OS.

Since my earliest posts, I have since learned about what the requirements are for hosting Kentico: https://docs.kentico.com/display/K8/Server+and+hosting+requirements

I also misunderstood several things earlier and now realize that we are talking about 1 server for Kentico and 1 for the websites.
1 physical server will run the IIS server and database server. You'll be dealing with one machine though. You only need to worry about multiple ones if you eventually need to have a dedicated database server but for that you'll need to have a fairly complex web infrastructure running with a lot of traffic. If you must go the dedicated route, you should check out a reputable company when you are dealing with a company enterprise solution such as SoftLayer. You'll want to have your servers close to your audience generally. Chicago is sort of the central fiber choice for North America if it is spread with Kansas City possibly being a good alternative if the solution isn't more expensive.
