If you have windows 7, 8, or 8.1, then you'll have up to a year from (whenever windows 10 releases) to get it free.
I haven't been keeping up with windows 10, so I'm in the same boat as you are.

You lose a couple of minor things that you probably were using alternatives for anyway for the most part. You lose native DVD player because Media Player is now gone. You'll also be forced to do auto updates if you have a Home Premium version or below. Supposedly, there may be a package manager with it where you can just type in what you want for a program and it finds it, installs it and maybe keeps it updated for you automatically. MS touts this as some genius idea that struck the design team once again leaving Linux out of the credits who have been doing this for around 12 years now. They did the same with Volume Shadowing and Transparency and so-on in the past, so I guess nothing new.

It seems like it will be decent though but I do have a problem with their UEFI implementation for OEMs (it wouldn't affect current PCs though). They are going to force Secure Boot to be on and remove the 3rd party certificate authorities. It may not seem important to anyone but this means they are attempting to force Windows as the only OS that can be installed onto the PC.

I'd imagine there will be outrage from the open source community just like when MS tried to do something similar with Windows 8. Secure Boot was on by default but you could turn it off. After the outcry, MS offered a CA for the Linux Foundation who made a bootloader for all Linux distributions that will work with Secure Boot enabled still.

I also don't think Secure Boot brings anything extra to the table. It is there to keep malicious software from writing itself pre OS boot (ie. the boot sector). You probably haven't heard of anyone ever getting a virus like this because nobody bothers anymore. Back in the 90s when this could happen, BIOS developers made their own protection where they had a rudimentary virus scanner scan the boot sector and even give the ability to lock it out. But MS spearheaded the "UEFI standard" to which they own the certificate key database to (so much for an open standard). There touted feature was that UEFI forces developers to make a GUI where a mouse can be used, basically so it would look pretty instead of the normal blue background screen with white lettering that you navigate with the keyboard, which was already around, just not something many OEMs bothered implementing. The exception that I can remember is Dell but that's it.

Anyway, take it all with a grain of salt. You can go ahead and reserve it now and not install it until you get the reviews in and wait it out if you'd like.

Media player classic > VLC > Toilet > Windows Media Player

I will admit it's pretty easy making a playlist and uploading it to your phone using windows media player (but that's because I don't know how else to do it)

It is OK, at least they updated the archaic file system from the 90s finally.

but newer versions of directx only for window 10 sort of screws people who plan on playing future games eh. At least that's what one of the articles said a while back.

I mean I'm tempted to do it... maybe..

Like DirectX 10 and 11 were for Windows 7 and 8?

The answer is no unless you must absolutely have the latest features of DirectX. The answer is also no, if the game uses OpenGL instead of DirectX.

Chances are though, if DirectX is a serious issue for you to consider a new Windows over, then you should start saving for a video card that will support it now.

I still torrent my videos. I haven't found anything else that gives me quality that is as good and is as cheap (ie free).

And when I listen to music, I typically like to listen to whole albums, so I just drag and drop the folder I want to use (since I haven't installed iTunes).

Are we talking about plex on an old computer shoved in a closet running linux? Because I use it, and it's awesome (as long as you stream media in it's original quality, Pentium 4s suck at transcoding). I also don't really know what else to stream it with.

I actually do use Plex as coincidence would have it. But yes, Plex, Kodi (was once called XBMC), PlayOn, whatever floats your boat.

Is this what you run mumble on?

I'd consider a media server, but right now space is a bit limited. I also don't know what I get out of it versus just using my laptop and my terrabytes of external HDD's. When either of you have free time, would you be willing to start a thread to convince me to build one? I can't say I have the money right now, but I would consider it within the year.

Well, I reformatted that computer since y'all last used the mumble server (although installing it again is easy anyway). But yeah, it's pretty simple to set up, especially if you're going to use plex. I guess I could make a guide pretty easily.

You don't really need a dedicated box for a dedicated server. Though with Raspberry Pi, you are talking about a $40 solution and maybe some more for a powered USB hub for your external HDDs.

Who else has updated to 10?

So far I can't say I'm impressed. This Slate article did help me with some of my security settings: http://www.slate.com/articles/technology/bitwise/2015/08/windows_10_privacy_problems_here_s_how_bad_they_are_and_how_to_plug_them.html?wpsrc=sh_all_dt_tw_bot. But I do have a feeling there are more I need to take care of.

I can upgrade on like three of my computers (which I keep putting off), but I'm waiting until November-ish to upgrade my main computer so I can avoid some bugs in ArmA 3 and such. I mean, the upgrade isn't going anywhere until next year.

The privacy issues are certainly a concern and showing direction that Windows is evolving into. Probably an SaaS (Software as a Service) ie. Cloud, operating system. This will make it so that your data will need to at least in part be stored by MS. It doesn't mean that they have to give themselves permission to look but I'm sure there's no way they won't at least try to build lots of analytics based on it, meaning they will have to look, even programmatically. What better way to test the waters than this? Just look at Cortana and what that means to privacy. If you want all of your data that interacts with Cortana private, you have to disable it.

On to the other stuff. I haven't upgraded. My wife tried and it got stuck at 30% for hours and she restarted. Windows blue screened and I had to rebuild the BCD. Not by the awesome bootrec /RebuildBcd. Oh no. Windows boot loader couldn't find the sector of the harddrive c: was, much less c:\Windows to boot it. I had to do a checkdisk to rebuild journal entries, then make the partition active with Windows on it, then force write the boot sector and again, not with the awesome automatic bootrec /FixBoot. Eventually, after manually rebuilding (not complete super manual - which I've done before by physically writing the boot file, creating a new volume GUID, and then forcing my new parameters into the bootloader) I got Windows 7 to boot again.

I'm sure it would be fine on my own computer that I build myself but I still haven't wanted to upgrade. If I wanted the "new" feature of multiple desktops, I'd use Linux (I do!). If I wanted DirectX 12, I wouldn't care until I had a DX 12 video card, if I wanted faster boot, I'd force logoff of the user and put it in hibernate anyway. There just isn't a whole lot of reason to update with one exception. Some Visual Studio functionality is locked into Windows 10. But honestly, if my programming environment is important to me and it is locked into an OS, then it isn't a very good development language to begin with.

Seriously though. When the biggest features are the: Start Menu (I use Windows 7 for Windows anyway), touch centric UI (I don't have a touch screen and I use a desktop), Cortana (I didn't use my own voice command assistant I built for Windows 98 in the 90s, so I doubt I'd give up my private data to do so now), universal apps (uh yeah, I can use executables, yay!) and Secure Boot which does the exact same thing BIOS since the 90s have been doing but this time in a locked down environment where MS literally holds the (private) keys to allow only certain operating systems to boot (UEFI) then I can't really see a need to upgrade.

Sure there are also the aforementioned virtual desktops and supposedly an apt like software update system, both taken from circa 2002 Linux but if I wanted that, I have that.

The other issue is that the first upgrades are going to be the worst. MS will need to push patches to fix problems. Better to let the early adopters face these problems and let you upgrade hassle-free.

Steve's checklist for loving an OS:
✔ Can browse OFPR site
✔ Can install steam
✔ Boots to OS when you turn computer on

And there you have it, what's not to love?

Also, multiple desktops is a feature in WX? They should've had that a looooooong time ago.

Would if I could but I've got Windows 8.1 Enterprise. Might end up waiting for Windows 10.1 before doing so anyway.

I love the fact I can play my xbox 1 on my PC.  I haven't had any issues yet minus my nvidia drivers got messed up on upgrade.  plus DX12, reason alone to upgrade.  If you don;t like it you can roll back to our old OS within a month.

So, do you have to have an XB1 in order to play those games then? Or can I skip the console?

You have to have an XB1 still. Personally, I think it isn't a big deal and like DX12, something that should be included on any Windows still not at End Of Life. But who cares. Video cards support hardware acceleration using OpenGL as well anyway.

So, I guess it is a benefit if you travel a fair amount and want to play your XB1 in a different city off your laptop. But if you are just happy to be able to play XB1 on your PC in your room rather than on your TV in the living room, then I will judge you for your laziness.

With the bandwidth involved, I'm sure it needs better than Internet to even be above 30 FPS consistently.

The game thing is a legitimate problem. It doesn't have to be super old games but games like FallOut 3 for example. As for the media, without researching, I'd think you just need to install the right codec.

I tried playing SWAT 3 about a month ago and it wouldn't work until I download the CCCP codec thing.
Anyway, I accidentally updated to WX and so far the only complaint I have is that I can't pin stuff to my start menu. It's annoying, but w/e.

Fallout 3 doesn't work on Windows 10? How is that even possible? Isn't that the same engine as Skyrim?

It may be because when you install FallOut 3, it is a Games for Windows...game. So it needs that dumb infrastructure...that was turned off.

Huh. So then if you bought if off Steam or something instead it should still work fine?

Nah, the Steam version also has the GFWL version. The fixes include installing the GFWL client AND finding a d3dd9.dll (Direct X 9's Direct3D) and tossing it in the Fallout3 folder as apparently good old DirectX 12 (Windows 10) isn't too good at backwards compatibility.

Same goes for some other games.

I picked up Fallout 3 about a month ago when it was on sale on Steam and it kept crashing on me. I guess I now know why...  I had given up on it.

One of my biggest complaints with WX is how it fucks with file associations. I use VLC media player as my default for any music or videos. Unfortunately, I can't set it in the program to be the default for everything. I have to open each type of file and set each one. Then, when I installed Windows Movie Maker (because of course there isn't a video editor in WX) it fucked up all my associations again.

For the most part though, I think WX is fine. It is the small things like I mentioned above which are annoying. I also miss having a start menu with organized programs.
