My laptop is 4 years old and it is starting to have some issues. A couple months ago I reformatted in the hopes that would solve some of my slowdown issues. Recently I've been getting issues that might be with the network card. Last night I had to restart the computer when I lost internet on my laptop, but not my phone. It has also been getting really weird lag spikes, or what feels like lag spikes, but what I think might actually just be the computer slowing down on computing and then catching up.

So that brings me to now, when I saw that I don't think my laptop can handle Fallout 4. This is what I currently have: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834230141.

If I get a new computer, my budget goal is about $800 to $1K. I also want something that is portable, hence the form factor options. I think Micro ATX might be a bit on the larger size for me from what I've seen. For a laptop, I'd ideally like one that is at least partially upgradeable (HDDs, Memory and if possible GPU). I've heard MSI's can be upgraded.

If I go with a Mini ITX or Micro ATX I'd also have to get a monitor. I do have a keyboard and mouse though. I would also just assume build the whole thing if I go this route.

Lastly, I'm in no rush since my laptop is still working, albeit not so well. And if you know of any student discounts, please try and factor those in (I have a .edu email address I can use).

Thoughts?

Here's a sample ITX build I started to put together:
$50  Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119286
$375  CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117559 (so expensive!)
$165  Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128846
$90 Memory: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233833
I'm not up to date on my video cards, but my budget is about about $150 to $200 there and I would still need to get a monitor, CPU heatsink, a whatchamacallit energy source thingy, 1 SSD and 1 storage drive.

Personally I prefer Micro ATX to Mini ITX. It just seems to me that mini ITX has too many drawbacks compared to Micro ATX. However, if you're not planning on upgrading or using as many expansion slots (most people wouldn't). ITX is going to be smaller but ATX is going to be more flexible.

You could go with an mATX board and get a case with a handle for portability like so: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811154094&ignorebbr=1.
A decent video card for ~ $200 would probably be the GTX 960 (Nvidia).

That was a decent laptop for sure. The lag spikes are during gameplay maybe? I'd bet that the GPU probably needs a good cleaning but that can be a pain because you probably need to take the laptop apart. Saying that, it isn't a bad time to think about an upgrade but you should wait on Cyber Monday/Black Friday in my opinion and also check prices with Amazon as well.

For ITX I wouldn't recommend for gaming at all. It is great for portability but also for low power applications. The CPU would be something like an Intel Atom for example and it isn't very powerful when compared to an Intel i5.

Mini/Micro ATX is probably more of what you are looking for if you want portability, upgradeability and good power per dollar. A laptop of course is also a good investment but it is difficult to find a good deal for a gaming laptop at your budget that isn't a private sell but then again, maybe you can find some deals on the top end.

I think I'm leaning towards a PC now. Since my laptop still works, why bother replacing it and why not just get something that will be upgradeable and powerful and still have the laptop for when I want it (ie sitting on the toilet).

As for ITX, there are plenty of systems that are basically just smaller versions of Micro-ATX setups and use proper processors. Here's an example: http://www.forbes.com/sites/antonyleather/2014/02/03/how-build-a-liquid-cooled-mini-gaming-pc-for-under-1000/

I totally agree with you about waiting for cyber Monday/black Friday. Which is why I'm starting to do my research now. :)

After reading the Forbes article (god I hate their site and how you have to wait to even get to it), it made me think about liquid cooling which I had never even considered before. I know I will NOT be overclocking. I have never bothered before, nor do I expect to do so in the future. That being said, should I think about it since there are not liquid cooling units for ~$50?

I will most likely drop down to an i5 Skylake CPU since they are more in line with my budget.

Here's an updated build:

CPU ($200-$260):
One of these 3

Case options ($50-$75):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811112424 - I am a sucker for Lian Li
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811112372
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA24G28M3890
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811133260
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA66Z2KU2267 - this one is so pretty but does not have front access USBs nor Audio jacks :(
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=9730707&CatId=11635
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=8753761&CatId=8582 (the one from the Forbes article, and a bit pricey)

Mobos ($130-$160):
One of these two

Memory ($100):
One of these? ~$100 price range seems about right unless you think I should really going for 2x16GB.

GPU ($200 budget):
I am a bit lost here - too many options and I don't know which brands are good. But like Sushi mentioned, an Nvidia GTX 960 sounds good.

PSU ($100 budget):
I think I need about 500 Watts but I'm not sure about the form factor and am confused.

SSD (~$160):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147373 500GB at this sort of price works great for me.

I have a couple of external HDD's I'd use for now instead of getting an internal one for storage.

CPU Cooler ($50):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835181010 - Although it doesn't list LGA 1151...

Monitor ($250 budget):
I want something that is 24"+ but have no idea where to start.

Windows 7 ($100):
Unless someone has an extra key/copy... ::) Or if they can activate a refurbisher key thingy which I think goes for about $50-60.  I'd also consider Windows 10 since that is what I have on my laptop. But I think I do prefer 7.

The build above comes out to $1240 at the low end including the monitor.

Notably absent is an optical drive. I barely ever use my current one...

For the GPU, you can check Tom's recommended buy in your price range: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-review,3107.html. They're recommending the R9 380, which they say is less efficient but should outperform the 960 across the board. Because you have a small build though you may not have the headroom for the 380, in which case the 960 makes sense.

As far as the brands go, the only real differences are the logos, included extras, and sometimes the cooling solutions. In general the best bet is probably just the cheapest regardless of brand, so start there, and then see if there are any options for an extra $10 that will get you better cooling or a higher clock speed.

Thanks Red.

I also took a look at my bank account and had already forgotten that I just had to buy a new fridge. Looks like I might be waiting a bit longer than I had hoped. :/

Stupid thing seems to have kicked the bucket... :(

So, here are my current thoughts:

1. Get a ~$200 tablet to tide myself over until April when I hear is the best time to buy new computers/parts. If so, do you know of any that I can hook up my external HDD's to them?
2. Build a new PC for ~$800 (not including the monitor).
3. Buy a new laptop for that same ~$800.

Any thoughts?

That sucks man. I don't know anything about what time of year it's best to buy computer parts. Too bad this didn't happen a couple weeks ago so you coulda got something on boxing week sales. But as far as hooking up a hard drive to a tablet, it's doable. I know the Microsoft tablets have actual USB ports, so that would be the easiest route. But with an Android tablet you can get one of these doohickeys to hook up an external drive. It'll just appear as removable storage in the OS.

That doesn't sound like very much fun for very long though, since you won't be able to move the tablet around much with a hard drive hanging off the end. Especially not if your external HDD is a 3.5" and requires a power connection - if you're tether to the wall then your tablet is basically a desktop, and I'd say you might as well save yourself the $200.

Thanks Red. As for being tethered, the main times I would tether myself are to watch porn, so it wouldn't be much of an issue. I'm assuming there aren't any easy ways to hide video files on most tablets. For my normal movies, I'd probably just transfer them over as needed.

Renting out my master on Airbnb has been treating me well. So I am thinking I might build a new PC next month.

Now my new question is LGA 2011v3 or LGA 1151? Or something else?

LGA 2011v3 build start:

Memory $120 for 32GB DDR4: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231796
Mobo $200: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157543
CPU $350: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117402 - This price should come down once the Broadwell chips hit the market.
Graphics Card ~$300 for an NVIDIA GTX 970 (or equivalent Radeon)

I'm thinking Oculus Rift's requirements as base specs.

I'm not tied specifically to any of these parts. I just picked them based on price/rating. Things I know I want: 32GB of DDR4 ram, Micro-ATX, 500GB SSD, and a bunch of USB 3.0 ports (preferably 3.1).

Lastly, I'm going to wait until the Broadwell chips start shipping to drive down prices.

Looks nice. Two questions about the RAM though. Why 32GB? And do you need that speed for some reason? My understanding was anything above 1600 has basically no performance improvement for general use and gaming on Intel systems.
